Shia Muslims all over the world commemorate the martyrdom anniversary if Imam Hossein (PBUH) across the globe and will soon be attending morning rituals in remembrance of him. Millions of Iranians will take to their local streets and mosques, dressed in black, as they partake in mourning processions marking the day of Tassoua. The ninth day of the lunar month of Muharram is officially known as Tassoua. Tassoua marks the day before Imam Hossein (PBUH) and his followers were killed by the Yazid forces in a place known as Karbala, which is now in present-day Iraq. [caption id="attachment_3024" align="alignleft" width="300"] Mourners gather in the streets[/caption] As thousands of mourners gather, they organize into groups, dressed in black, beating upon their chests in harmony as they remember the pain and suffering of their martyr. Their chests and backs often become red and swollen; some even bloodied as the procession continues. For the non-Muslims, the Zoroastrians, Christians and Jews who come to watch the procession, it can be quite an overwhelming site. The crowds listen to chants and poems which speak of the events which lead up to the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (PBUH) and as many as seventy-two of his loyal followers. As the mourners gather, they listen sorrowfully, in admiration to the tales of courage, hardship, and patience endured by Imam Hossein (PBUH) and his followers. These tales depict the brutality directed toward them for their devotion to Islam, as Iranians gather to mourn on this occasion.
