Each year, Iranians gather to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein (PBUH) and his followers on the day of Tassoua, after which follows the day of Ashura on Wednesday, October 12. In Tehran, people flock to Imam Hossein square which is located in the east of the city. Mourners dressed in black fill the streets on this day, as they remember the suffering of those martyred. Crowds mourn as they listen to the tales of the suffering and anguish brought upon Imam Hossein and his family. Following the heartfelt speech of the day, mourners will pray for the "oppressed people in the world to overcome their Yazid" of their time. They will also pray for the reemerging of Imam Mahdi, who was the grandson of Imam Hossein (PBUH). One their day of martyrdom, the family of Imam Hossein (PBUH) was burnt to death in their tents by Yazid's army following his martyrdom at Karbala. On the day of Ashura, a tent stands in the square, one resembling that which the Imam's family had made their dwelling place. The tent will be set alight and burn at the end of the day of Ashura in remembrance of them, as the crowds watch and mourn how the women and children suffered on this day so many years ago. Men and women will also participate in the congregational prayer at noon in the middle of the square, following the manner which Imam Hussain (PBUH) prayed in the midst of a battle on the day of Ashura. Many other mass mourning ceremonies will be held in multiple squares and streets across Tehran and the rest of Iran. Ceremonies will also take place inside the mosques, at the holy shrine of Hazrat Abdul Azim and even the Tehran Bazaar. The majority of Iranians will attend these ceremonies and Nazri food, or charity food, will be made available throughout the city so that there will be no need for such concerns on this day.
