The young immigrants living in Canada are looking for restaurants where they can gather and experience the familiar flavors of Iran that they love so much but with a cosmopolitan touch to them.
The restaurant Kadbanu has become a popular choice for them, in a cheery atmosphere with some great food and great prices!
The owner, Salome Mohyeddin, has created an open, airy space with a huge skylight and interiors painted in white. Gorgeous blue accents fill the room and are seen in the hand-painted pottery and stacked Persian alphabet blocks.
Here the flavors are fresh and light on the stomach. Each day they prepare fresh sandwiches made from a crisp, sesame seed barbari. Their sandwich fillings are just superb, especially the beef tongue sandwich with its salty dill pickles, as well as the delicious of sheep's milk cheese, fresh mint and ripe tomatoes in their veggie sandwich.
If you're dining at Kadbanu, you have got to try one of their stews. Their mirza ghassemi is a wonderful smoked eggplant and tomato stew, with garlic flavors coming through and a sunny-side up egg to top it. The gheymeh stew is a comforting stew for winter and includes yellow split peas and beef shank as the main ingredients which are flavored with sour limes, so tasty!

Some additional bits on the menu which you can enjoy are the pickled vegetables or a bowl of herb yogurt which are great as side dishes. The Tahchin is cooked using a combination of basmati rice, yogurt, and sliced chicken. In an attempt to bring out the flavors and create an amazing dish, it is baked in a mold so that the inside is nice and steamy and the outside is browned and crunchy. The tahchin is then served in slices with tart butter-fried barberries on top and is one of the chef's specialties. The cherry juice is always on the drinks menu, as are a selection of teas. There is nothing like a classic tea served with cardamom.
